Operating in hazardous gas environments leaves no margin for uncertainty. Facilities handling explosive atmospheres need equipment designed, built, and documented for that risk. The MD Pneumatics EX ATEX Series addresses that need with certified rotary positive displacement blowers and vacuum boosters engineered for compliance with ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU and demanding industrial duty.

What Problem This Product Solves

Explosive atmospheres place strict requirements on mechanical equipment. Standard blowers can introduce ignition sources through heat, friction, or leakage. The EX ATEX Series is built for locations where flammable gases may be present and where equipment must meet defined zone, gas group, and temperature class limits.

MD Pneumatics products in this series are designed to operate safely when installed and specified correctly, reducing risk in processes that cannot tolerate failure.

Product Overview

The MD‑Kinney EX ATEX Series includes rotary positive displacement blowers and vacuum boosters intended for hazardous areas. These units extend the long‑established PD Plus platform with explosion protection features and documented compliance.

Key points at a glance:

  • Designed for explosive gas environments as defined by ATEX
  • Certified for use in Zone 1 and Zone 2 applications
  • Covers a wide range of industrial blower and vacuum booster duties
  • Supported by MD selection and documentation tools

Typical Markets and Applications

Markets

  • Chemical
  • Petrochemical
  • Oil and gas
  • Energy and power
  • Pharmaceutical
  • Plastics

Applications

  • Bio‑gas treatment and compression
  • Pneumatic conveying
  • Freeze drying
  • Vacuum coating
  • Heat treatment
  • Degasification
  • Steam compression
  • Vapor recovery
  • Soil vapor extraction
  • Process gas boosting
  • Sorbent and activated carbon injection

These applications share a common requirement: controlled handling of gases under pressure or vacuum in classified areas.

ATEX Classification and Compliance

Within ATEX regulations, responsibility is shared. The user defines process conditions and explosion zones. The equipment manufacturer provides compliant designs and documentation.

Internal classification

  • Available for systems with inlet pressure below 100 mbar
  • Temperature classes T3 to T1
  • Gas group verified at quotation

External classification

  • Zones 1 or 2
  • Gas groups IIA, IIB, or IIB + H₂
  • Temperature classes T3, T2, or T1

MD supports this process through its VBXpert Portal, which uses operating conditions to guide selection and configuration.

Design and Construction Features

The EX ATEX Series incorporates features intended to support safe operation and monitoring in hazardous environments.

Notable design elements include:

  • Stainless steel exterior crossover tubing between oil sumps
  • DIN flange ports as standard, with imperial options
  • Vertical flow design to reduce internal process buildup
  • Double‑envelope mechanical sealing for high containment
  • Instrumentation, vibration, and temperature monitoring ports
  • Cooling coils supplied as standard, with stainless options available
  • Discharge temperature port supporting safety shutoff at 177°C (350°F)

Construction materials include cast iron housings, ductile iron rotors and shafts, with stainless steel options available for specific services.

Performance and Operating Range

  • Blower applications up to 2.34 bar (34 psig) MAWP
  • Hydrostatic testing to 10.34 bar g (150 psig)
  • Gas seal pressure testing to 2.34 bar g (34 psig)

Vacuum boosters are designed to pair with piston, liquid ring, dry vacuum, and vane pumps to increase pumping speed and achieve deeper vacuum levels in demanding processes.

Special Service Capabilities

The EX ATEX Series can be configured for demanding gas services:

  • Hydrogen service for applications above 0.5 percent hydrogen by volume with appropriate pressure conditions
  • Oxygen service for applications with oxygen content of at least 23.5 percent

Lubrication is handled with MD PLUS full synthetic lubricant, formulated specifically for MD Pneumatics and Kinney equipment and supplied as standard.
